Recommended storage configuration

Currently I have this setup in a small startup:

SAS DAS:
  • 2x2TB HDD RAID1 (used for most of the VMs)
  • 10x2TB HDD RAID6 (used as additional storage for VMs (OMV))
Server:
  • 2x300GB HDD RAID1 (proxmox)
  • 250 GB consumer grade SSD (VMs that need a bit more speed)
All of the VM's have a daily or weekly backup to the RAID6 over the OMV NSF share.

I have a new server coming in a few days that will retire the existing one.
The new server comes with 2x enterprise grade 120GB SSDs and now I am wondering what would be a good way to organize the storage.

Possible configurations:
  1. Configuration:
    • enterprise grade SSD in RAID1 EXT4 or ZFS-Z1 for proxmox install
    • consumer grade SSD LVM
    • DAS RAID1 LVM
  2. Configuration:
    • enterprise grade SSD in RAID1 EXT4 or ZFS-Z1 for proxmox install AND local lvm-thin (default install)
    • DAS RAID1 LVM
    • consumer grade SSD not in use
  3. Configuration:
    • consumer grade SSD with EXT4 for proxmox install
    • enterprise grade SSDs VG LVM
    • DAS RAID1 LVM
  4. Configuration:
    • enterprise grade SSD with EXT4 for proxmox install
    • enterprise grade SSD LVM
    • DAS RAID1 LVM
    • consumer grade SSD not in use

What would you do?
Any other recommendations for the storage combination and configuration?

Hi,

I would recommend you to go with the second config.
A raid for the rootfs is required if you provide productive services.
Normally the enterprise SSD which comes with the server is fast enough for multiple VM's.
And you could anyway use the consumer SSD.
