Proxmox Backup Server in Proxmox?

Hello all, this may be a silly question or one that has been answered before but I can’t find a definitive answer so here goes:

Can I install and fully use Proxmox Backup Server in a VM within Proxmox? Is this not recommended? Why? What will I lose? Are the Backup Server features all included in regular Proxmox?

Yes you can. I use mine in a container.

It's not recommended mostly from a infrastructure point of view. If this server goes down you now don't have access to your backups.

Other than that it works perfectly.

Any reason why in a Container rather than a VM? Is this an LXC container?
Out of interest what else do you use LXC Containers for?

LXC containers are lighter weight that's all. They're not as customizable as a full VM but it's working for me so far.

You can use a number of things for containers for example: https://www.turnkeylinux.org/business-management

You can also install it on the PVE host itself alongside PVE, then you don't need LXC and can access hardware resources like disks directly

Add the pbs repo, then:

> apt install proxmox-backup-server
