Hi there i already have a PVE Server up and running in my HomeLab. Now i plan to expand my HomeLab with a second Server. Actually i use Open Media Vault in a VM on my PVE Server for my NAS Solution. My new Server Rack will have HotSwap Cases so i want to move my NAS to the new Server. The new Server should be my NAS and a Backup Server at the same time.
Through my Research until now i figured out two Solutions.
1. PVE as the Host OS and OMV/TrueNAS and PBS running in VMs.
2. PVE as the Host OS with the PBS Package installed and OMV/TrueNAS running as a VM.
I want to use PBS as my Backup Solution to get the best performance/efficency through the kooperation with my PVE main Server but for the NAS Solution i am not sure if i want to stay with OMV or if should change. Did anyone here have already experience with such an Setup or can give other possible Setup Suggestions to run a NAS-Backup Kombi on a single System?

There are a multitude of ways to run PBS. The recommended way is -of course- to use separate/independent hardware with SSDs only.

Whatever compromise you implement on a single hardware host: think carefully about the situation when that hardware dies.

((( What I do in my homelab is to utilize old, obsolete "servers", mainly Xeon PCs. I have several of them as they do not fit my specific need for a PVE server anymore. All have local disks: relative large HDDs plus "Special Device" SSDs. Everything here is ZFS only. )))
