Hallo there,

I have an AMD Epyc based server which is unable to boot ProxmoxVE v7.1-2. (installed from the latest .ISO).
I first get a BusyBox CLI from initramfs, after exiting that CLI, I only get a kernel panic, check the screenshot for details.
Other linux OSes like Ubuntu 20.04.4 or Clonezilla boot, also did a RAM test and SMART test of the boot drives, everything was OK without errors.

Any ideas why I get the kernel panic?

Thanks Daniel

Some more informations would be good, for example:
  • Is secure boot enabled or disabled in the bios? (Should be disabled.)
  • Do you use uefi or legacy boot?
  • What is the disk(-type) you installed PVE on?
  • Which filesystem did you use?
  • What storage controller is used for the disk with the PVE installation?
  • Any raid in use? Hardware or software?

I also noticed, that your bios is rather old. You might consider giving the most recent bios (and storage controller firmware and maybe even ssd firmware, if any) a try. (Obviously on your own risk and watch out for your exact mainboard revision!)

To answer your questions:
- Secure Boot is disabled
- UEFI boot is enabled
- two SATA SSDs
- ZFS
- Epycs onboard SATA controller
- Software RAID1 via ZFS

Yes I know the BIOS is outdated, but to be frank I don't want to upgrade it.
