PBS on PV instead of Synology or Qnap

Hi there,

I'm planning a customers infrastructure and thinking about putting there a Miniserver (or other hardware?!) there with 2 installed VMs instead of our standard NAS. I'd setup PV on host and on there 1xPBS and 1xTurnkey Fileserver. So I've the advantage of using PBS and can have a NAS to with not much more costs.

Our Backup Software needs a cifs-Share to do Backups on but when I'm planning now I'd like to have the extra feature of backing up the servers with PBS on a secound way so just because its working :).

May someone can answer my questions or have another idea hot to do it?
  1. I read about running PBS as vm on PV - is this "recommended" or stable? if yes what to think about? (ZFS on ZFS, ext4,....)
  2. What are you using as cifs or iscsi Backup target - Is there an alternative to turnkey fileserver? Like it because its fast up-and-running
  3. What Hardware would you take for it? I'm thinking about a Miniserver without Raid-Controller but thats too expensive compared to a Synology with 16TB ~1.3k€
Thanks for your help
