Cluster break on master backup restore

Hi, I am facing something unexpected. Almost everything is in title. Here's my setup:

I have 3 nodes:
  • mxa (master)
  • mxb (slave)
  • mxc (slave)
I am using a Debain 11 cloud-ready qcow2 image and install PMG on top of that, which works quite well. I also configured all nodes with Proxmox Backup Server.

My first question, do I need to backup all nodes or just master is enough ?

I thought backup master would be enough, so I did a backup of master node, and tried to restore it on same node. All went well, except the cluster integrity. /etc/pmg/cluster.conf don't seem to be included in the backup for some reasons and is missing once backup restoring is finished. I cannot see any node on master GUI and I need to create the cluster again, remove cluster.conf on all slave nodes and join them one again.

Am I missing something or is working as intended and so why not include cluster configuration within the backup.

Thanks for your support
Boris

a Backup of your master node should be enough in a standard PMG setup (if you have local modifications, that are external to PMG, to each of your nodes, you need to backup those as well of course!)

It is working as intended - the cluster.conf is in the backup-archive - but it does not get restored.
(Quarantine information, Clusterinformation in the database, and greylist values are not backed up)
The rationale behind this is mostly that it's always easier to just create a fresh pmg-node and join it to the cluster than to try to fix an existing one back in.
* If your master-node is gone - promote one of the others and join a new node (which you can then promote to master again as well)

I hope this explains it!

Thank you for your quick answer. You made your point perfectly clear, it is indeed very easy to proceed this way. I'll stick with this process.

Best regards
Boris
