Hello All,

I have a query related to VM migration from an old proxmox server to new one. I have PVE 1.8 running in the old server and bought a new one which has PVE version 3.1-24 installed in it now. There are some 30 VMs present in my old server which I need to move into this new one. Can anyone suggest how can I migrate or clone the VMs present in PVE1.8 server and use them in the new server?

Thank you in advance.

backup/restore should work.

Thanks, Tom. I had tried backup using vzdump and used the tar file to create a new VM in new server. It displayed an error message related to 'version different'. Is there any other way to backup the data so that it can be used in new server?

Hi,
you use tar for extraction? Or qmrestore?

qmrestore should work, but you can also use tar but must then modified the config (and move to the right place).

Hi Udo,

I had used vzrestore to restore the tar.gz file; I will try again today as I did this around 10 days ago. Would you suggest to use "vzdump" or "tar -cxvf" for backup of the VM in PVE 1.8?

Hi Beginer,
the VM is an CT (not clear in previos post)! I would use vzdump.

What is the error message of vzrestore? Does the private data and the config was extracted?

Thank you, Udo. Yes, it is a CT, I forgot to mention it in previous post. For taking backup of the VM, I am using tar command. After entering into this path {/var/lib/vz/private/105}, I used the tar command as "tar -zcvf /var/lib/vz/template/cache/ubuntu-6.0-standard_6.0-2_i386.tar.gz . ". Will it be proper way to use this tar file in new server for restoring it as a new VM? Or, should I use vzdump for backing up the VM? If possible, can you please provide the syntax of the vzdump command for creating the VM backup? I honestly do not remember the error message of vzrestore, as this was few days ago. I will provide the error message if any, once I try to restore the VM now/today.

Thanks again.

I had a PVE 1.9 server that had a few VM's left on it. I installed PVE 2.3 on another (extra) server, and migrated the VM's ultimately to get to PVE 3.1. My process:

1) Backed the VM up on PVE 1.9, copied the compressed backup to PVE 2.3, and restored the backup on PVE 2.3.
2) Launched VM on PVE 2.3, updated any necessary drivers it wanted.
3) Backed the VM up on PVE 2.3, copied the compressed backup to PVE 3.1, and restored the backup on PVE 3.1.

I thought I read somewhere on the forums that you couldn't take a pre-1.9 VM straight to 3.x?

This method took longer, but I didn't experience any data loss.
