Use USB NIC as main NIC in Proxmox?

I attached a Plugable 2.5Gbe USB adapter to my Proxmox install, my goal is to assign it to VMs and get the higher throughput and also to use it for backups/restores to my NAS. They are attached to a 2.5Gbe switch. I can't seem to get the drivers working on Ubuntu, I installed the Realtek 2.5Gbe NIC driver (USB version) using make and make install, did not work for either 20.04 Desktop or Server. Other than that, I tried to login to the web interface using the USB NIC's IP address, not sure what I'm supposed to do here because restore/backup speeds are working at the 1Gbps connection from the main integrated NIC. I didn't want to disconnect the main NIC as it might be needed later for accessing the interface if the USB NIC goes down, but open to suggestions. The two NICs are on the same subnet, don't know how to place on different subnets without losing internet connectivity.

Is there any way I can get the faster USB NIC working on the VMs and for the backups/restores?

You don't assign one of them a IP nor gateway. Then the webUI can only be reached through one of them but you won't run into problems because of screwed up routes.
