Hi.

I have a question regarding the upgrade process for Proxmox VE in combination with Ceph.

Currently, my Proxmox VE setup is running version 7, and I also have Ceph installed with version 15.2.17 (Octopus). I am planning to upgrade Proxmox VE to version 8, as per the official upgrade documentation.

However, I noticed that the upgrade instructions recommend upgrading Ceph to version 17.2 Quincy before proceeding with the Proxmox VE upgrade. The challenge I am facing is that I do not have an active Ceph cluster; it has not been set up or used.

Given this situation, I have a few questions:

1. Is it possible to proceed with the Proxmox VE upgrade to version 8 without upgrading Ceph, considering I do not have an existing Ceph cluster?

2. If upgrading Ceph is necessary, how can I perform the upgrade when there is no existing Ceph cluster? The documentation mentions that the cluster must be healthy and working.

3. Can I upgrade Ceph to version 17.2 Quincy after upgrading Proxmox VE to version 8 if I decide to use Ceph in the future, and there is no existing Ceph cluster?

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or clarification on the recommended steps for upgrading in this scenario. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Thanks,
Stx.
