Update requires reboot?

When does an update require a reboot of a server? Only when there's a kernel update?

yes, a new kernel needs a reboot to get activated. if there is a qemu/kvm update, you need to shutdown and start your VMs in order to use the new version.

It is also common practice to reboot a server when libc and/or glibc is upgraded.
