Dear Proxmox Community,

we have been running Proxmox VE + Proxmox BS and are quite happy with it.
Just this morning, I needed to restore a single file from an old backup and it's been as easy and fast as it could possibly be.
So a big thank you to the proxmox team for a nice, easy and accessible Linux VM Backup solution!

Today I wanted to update Proxmox Backup Client on all our Ubuntu machines.
All Ubuntu 20.04 worked flawlessly, but every Ubuntu 18.04 states the following:

Bash:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
proxmox-backup-client : Depends: libc6 (>= 2.28) but 2.27-3ubuntu1.4 is to be installed
Depends: libgcc-s1 (>= 4.2) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages

So, I wanted to ask a few things:
Is this gonna be like this post where you stripped down the dependencies after development or is this the new minimum libc6 dependency version?
Seeing as Ubuntu 18.04 is not EOL right now (it will be in 2023 as far as I know), this could pose a problem for us (and possibly, many others too).
Is it possible to just keep those 18.04 Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox Backup Client 1 and still backup to a Proxmox Backup Server 2?
How long will Proxmox Backup Client v1 be accessible?

Or did I miss any upgrade steps?

which repository did you enable for the ubuntu client ?
if you use the pbs-client repository, it still is on 'buster' and version 1.1.10 which should work (and get support at least until next year)

I enabled the following Repository:
Code:
deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian/pbs bullseye pbs-no-subscription

After seeing that the new client does not work on Ubuntu 18, I re-enabled the "old" repository (for Ubuntu 18 hosts).
Code:
deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian/pbs buster pbs-no-subscription

version 1.1.10 which should work (and get support at least until next year)
Thank you very much for this information!
It would be really bad for us to lose the Backup-capability on all Ubuntu 18 Machines after we just migrated to Proxmox last year.

To be honest, I'd really hope for PBS Client 1 to work together with Proxmox Backup Server 2 until Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is EOL or somehow PBS Client v2 working on Ubuntu 20.04.
Is it planned to "backport" (or otherwise create a working build for) Client v2 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS?

pbs-client repository
That's gotta be new, right?
It hasn't been around back when Proxmox Backup Server started, as far as I remember.

the 1.x clients are supported for as long as the 1.x server is supported. Other than that, we aim for a very stable api, and breaking changes should not happen often and normally
only on major releases (iow. maybe pbs 3.0 has some breaking api changes). So since the backup client 1.x works with pbs 2.x, this should work for the lifetime of the pbs 2.x server

of course we do not plan to break the api on purpose, only when it's deemed necessary

AFAIK there no plans for something like that

well not that new...

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions.
I will mark this thread as solved.
