Hello! Also struggling with a thunderbolt j5 create adapter, plugging into a thunderbolt. Just picked it up, starting to think I should have stuck with the older usb connectors when I picked up the adapter.
Slightly different symptoms than yours but maybe related. As far as I can tell, the thunderbolt controller is being detected but no sign of the ethernet adapter being noticed. Installed boltctl and that isn't showing anything. Never had to mess with thunderbolt on linux before, so maybe just missing something. thunderbolt driver is there, and I also installed r8152.

I was able to get it working by adding the following modules (first via modprobe and then added to /etc/modules-load.d/thunderbolt.conf and confirmed it worked on reboot):
