Step by step...

Hi...

I'm a perfect new to proxmox (3.1)... I've seen some clips about it... got 4 old rack servers, and I'm ready to have some fun...
No commercial things involved - just learning, so if I mess something up - no harm... downtime - who cares?

What I want:
- Cluster of 4 phisical machines
- few VM: OpenSUSE for my private web sites, debian for mail server, ubuntu and windows server for fun...

What I did:
- Installed proxmox on completely empty server
- Uploaded some ISO files.
- Made few VM

What's my problem?
- When I'm trying to start VM console i get randomly:
On Ubuntu+Firefox: blank page, log says: "Error: command 'bin/nc -l -5 5900-w..."
On WIN7+Firefox or IE or Opera: Can't connect to server log says the same.

However few times I did connected to console and could start OpenSUSE or Ubuntu installation - never finished... (that's the other story: =>here)

What causes this random connection problem?

Hi,
timeouts (to load the java-plugin for the console). Simply press "Reload" in the console-window and you should see the console-window of the VM.

Sometimes it's depends on your java-version (of the browser-plugin) - like on a mac...

on Ubuntu FF is not even asking for a permission to connect to ssl withourt certificate - just displays blank page.
on Windows, I get a permission request, then it showsn I'm connected... and then error.

So on Windows it's random. Sometimes I can open console, sometimes I don't - the big question is what could possibly cause it?

With ubuntu 13.10, go to software center, search for "java", select/install Icedtea java plugin. Restart firefox and you should be able to use vnc console.

Connect to pve host via ssh and run pveperf command. Post results here.

DNS INT seems to be too high and BUFFERED READS are very low (you need 100MB/sec or more).
This could be the reasons for random timeouts.

You have tried to press reload inside the Console-window (java)??

After reinstal of Jave it works (ubuntu+FF)

Next step:

Got my Linux ISO uploaded, so here comes my attempt to install VM.
OpenSuse and Debian hangs (or it just looks so), Only Ibuntu is showing some installation pages...
Probably not enough RAM in "TestMachine".

Problem:
Network configuration.
-Proxmox has its own public IP - Works fine.
Which IP should the VM have?

a) the same as Proxmox host?
b) other public IP in the same class?
c) I should make (how?) private network for Virual Machines?

The basic question is: How to force VM to get an internet access?

...went through using the same IP and gate as the Proxmox has.
It surprised me, by full install ubuntu NO problems happened.

(I have also added 6 gigs of RAM to the machine - now its 6G and works much faster)

But now I got only console, which has no internet connection.
How to enable internet there?

Your options are b) or c). For c) you will need router or iptables. See examples: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Network_Model

Thanks for the tip...

I tried option a) with Ubuntu - installed - Has no internet connection.
I tried also option b) while my attemt to install OpenSuse - can't finish it. It says wrong IP or gate. IP is in the same class. As gate I used phisical gate (the same as used for proxmox) - I got some doubts here.

Isn't proxmox machine (its IP) the gate in this scenario?

Tried to ping Proxmox host frm VM console - host unreachable.

Hi,
normaly you should open an new thread for an new issue. Or better use the search function - there are plenty related postings

Ping from Host to VM should work because you are in the same subnet - therefore it's absolut equal which gateway do you defined!
Do you use brigded network?
How looks your VM-config (cat /etc/pve/qemu-server/VMID.conf) and how your network-config (cat /etc/network/interfaces)?

Use tcpdump to find the issue.
