Hello,

With the PVE backup job also providing a retention policy option, what is now the recommended way to set up retention policy? Implementing it in PVE seems natural since the backup job details will show you the retention settings as well giving you the complete picture.

Does implementing the retention policy as a Prune Job in PBS offer anything in addition to the settings in the backup job in PVE? I know that the more aggressive one will be enforced over the lax one, but what is the recommendation as to where to set the retention?

Thanks,

it depends on your setup
- the person setting up pruning on each side may not be the same
- the PVE system might not have the required privileges to prune
- there might be more than one job with the same datastore/NS target, but different pruning requirements
- ...

Thanks @fabian for the reply.

Am I correct in my assumption that setting up a Prune Job in PBS will also apply to the backups that I take from my non-PVE machines -- for eg. the backup of my desktop via the pbs client etc.

That could possibly be one of the advantages of using Prune Jobs so that you don't have to configure retention policies in different places.
