Server sometimes slow

ok, the KVM spawns two more threads after a while.

this can be seen in iotop.

when i shutdown the vm snd start it up again, it will run smoothly for about 15-30 minutes.

Then these thread reappear!

I can't see much i/o load in dne Windows XP VM itself with the task manager.
the problem has to be elsewhere.

Sharon,

1. What instructions did you use to load the previous Kernel?

2. Did you load each of the previous kernel versions to test?

3. Are you still experiencing occasional high loads?

its charon...
1)use the grub manpage to see how you manage kernel boots
2) i changed the grub conf to use "pve-kernel-2.6.24-7-pve"
The server is in use atm, so i could not play around with other kernel stuff.
3)yes, i will start testing plain CentOS 5.4 installations with KVM

Here are my results after downgrading the kernels.

This is yesterday running with pve-kernel-2.6.24-7-pve_2.6.24-11_amd64.deb for the first 3 hours until 3:27am where you see the "linux restart line. Then running with pve-kernel-2.6.24-7-pve_2.6.24-8_amd64.deb

You tell me if this data seem ok. Because for me I still see spikes... It is also worth mentioning that vzdump was running backup from midnight until about 4:25 am but that should not matter.

As I continue analyzing what is going on on the server, here is a strange piece of stats.

If you look at the samples for 7:40am and 7:50am, you notice that the server load was very high (14.64 and 20.57), but the CPU were over 90% idle. How can we explain this?

I am starting to believe that something between the kernel and proxmox might not be playing well with the intel nehalem system. Could it be a driver issue as Dietmar suggested sometime earlier?

the command sar -P gives me the following last 5 samples:

As I continue analyzing what is going on on the server, here is a strange piece of stats.

If you look at the samples for 7:40am and 7:50am, you notice that the server load was very high (14.64 and 20.57), but the CPU were over 90% idle. How can we explain this?

"load average" comes not only from CPU, but also IO: disk and network traffic.

So if more processes are hammering your disk at the same time, load average will go high, even if the CPU is idle.

Good point. However we are running a hardware raid card (adaptec 5405z) which under no load gives around 500MB/s bandwidth. And we only have about 10 openvz vps on this server.

Update: It is also worth mentioning that the server on overage is on very low load. The load spikes approximately one or twice every hour.

Can someone confirm if this behavior is normal?

A fast raid read performances does not help if your VMs do many fsync.

Are these SSD drives? If not, than these figures are only valid for single linear read.

With multiple processes accessing different parts of the disk, disk heads will start to seek, and your performance will drop significantly.

How do you have your guest images stored? In LVM files, or in normal files on a ext3 filesystem? If it's files on the filesystem which were not pre-allocated beforehand, it could be that they are very fragmented (especially if you began with "elastic" qcow2 files which grow on the host as the guest disk usage grows).

OK Dietmar, is there any reason why the openvz servers would do excessive fsync? If so what can be done to reduce it?

Would you think that the performance would be the same if one were to run openvz straight from the guess host vs through proxmox? What is the technical difference?

We only run openvz

You have to find what causes it. Read: what processes read or write a lot.

Run htop, iotop, atop etc. Write some scripts (i.e. ps aux saved every 30 secs; then compare it with sar output where the load happened etc.).

With some luck, you will be able to find something.

You run the container, so you need to find out yourself. Most likely a database application (mysql)? But I told you that already one week ago.

Dietmar I already confirmed as well that the mysql seems to be the one pushing the load high. What I do not understand is why does this end up in spikes?

If the general load is small that means that the vpss are not that demanding.

1. Why would mysql sometimes create spikes?

2. And is there something that we can do to prevent it from happening or is there something that needs to be done in order to optimize mysql so it does not create this kind of load

3. Or could this be a compatibility issue between the software, kernel and hardware?

So assuming that mysql is the guilty one here, how do we address this issue? Or are you saying that this is a normal behavior when running mysql based vps?

Re: Server sometimes slow - Xeon 5520 vs Xeon 5472

Between 9:10am and 9:30am this morning I backuped up and restored two active openvz vps from the nehalem 5520 (new host) to xeon 5472 (old host) which is the previous host we were using.

One of the two containers is one of the heaviest of all the 10. The new host still has about 8 vps and the old one has 2 now.

Here are the load history. the spikes around 9:20 can be disregarded as that was the time on they were being restored on the old host.

The conclusion is:
1. either the old host is ok because there are too few containers on it,
2. or there is a clear problem with the nehalem system as the load on the old host does not spike nearly as much as the new host.

NEW HOST (proxmox 1.4) (notice load spikes even after 9:30am through the day)
