Also, please can you test using another IO scheduler. You can do that by changing the boot option in /boot/grub/menu.lst (add 'elevator=deadline'), then reboot the server.

I will follow your advice. However I am limited on what I can test on a production server. But moving a vm to another hardware is an option that I will explore. I will let you know if I find something meaningful...

As of now the problem seems less significant. I have asked a couple of my vps users to monitor again yesterday and no one reported having as much of a slow down as previously.

I'll continue monitoring the situation.

today i had transfer some vm's via scp an i saw a big network-issue, the transfer-rate slows down the 10kb! possibly the driver for the networkcards? i have here 4 Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II.

I guess you are using the latest version? What's the output of

# pveversion -v

Is the problem reproducable? - how?
 
we installed an usb-networkcard and unloaded the broadcom module. for the moment is all fine. some people here say that the pve-1.2 are working. is in pve-1.2 an different broadcom (bnx2) module? in pve-1.4 it is 1.9.20b.

we compiled an old driver for the broadcom -> same result
without virtio and with the broadcom card -> same result

i think i will buy an e1000 or something for my server.

The problem of slowness of OpenVZ vps is still current. It seems a little better with 1.4 than 1.4b but here is some latest data from the command sar -P

Is there any reason why this host with only 12 active vps would see its load spike like this every now and then causing everything else to become slow?

Is there any other kind of data or trace I could run to give you meaningful data for you to look into this?

I would observe ram and swap usage. If you do not have enough ram things will slow down because there is insuficient cache or worse, the system starts swapping.

Unfortunately this is not the case. Something is not normal. Here is the equivalent memory/swap for that timeframe:
The server has 24GB of RAM. It always had at least 5GB free. It never hit the swap.

Alright guys I have received enough complains to take this as a serious issue.
While I appreciate the work of the proxmox team, I think I am about to give up on proxmox...

This performance issue is a nightmare and no one knows the cause. I might just go straight with a centos openvz...

My last shot with proxmox is to downgrade to 1.2 to see if the issue persists.
