Seeking Advice: Migrating VMs from Vmware ESXi 5.1 to Proxmox VE Without Direct Upgrade Path

Hello,

I'm in the process of migrating from an old server running VMware ESXi version 5.x to a new server with Proxmox VE. I've reviewed the Proxmox wiki page and noticed that automatic import of a full VM was tested on ESXi versions 6.5 through 8.0.

While planning this migration, I've encountered a challenge: the old server, currently running ESXi 5.1, isn't compatible with newer versions of ESXi, so I can’t upgrade to 6.5 in preparation for the import to Proxmox VE.

Therefore, I'm seeking advice on how to proceed with the migration given this constraint.

Any insights or alternative methods for migrating from ESXi 5.x to Proxmox VE – or insights on an upgrade path for ESXi for my situation – would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Please read the full guide and the linked advanced guide, there are alternative migration methods described.
