[SOLVED] Replace ZFS root disk

I am running zfs raid6 in proxmox 6 x 4TB drive 2nvme, 1 for cache, 1 for logs

2 of the hard drives failed at the same time, I am trying to follow the steps here, https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/best-practice-for-local-zfs-disk-replacement.112188/ but I think my syntax is wrong, or doing something wrong

sgdisk -R -works​

sgdisk -G - works​

zpool replace -f <pool> <old zfs partition> <new zfs partition>​

zpool replace -f rpool <old zfs partition> /dev/sda3​


I cannot find old zfs partition any more disk is unavailable hence replacing it​


each 4TB hdd needs to have three partition 1 boot partition 2 efi partition 3 rpool with data

wrong cmd tried it already on dev/sdd cmd
zpool replace -f [poolname] [old-disk-id] [new-disk-id] - if i run this cmd then it removes the boot partition and makes full drive as data only - not the best option

At the moment sda1 and sda2 are good but sda3 partition is empty and raid6 zfs is degraded

was /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST4000DX000-1C5160_Z1Z00V2D-part3 - zfs status

good if you dont have boot partition on the raid disk

You need to use partition3, not the whole disk. So for example "/dev/sdd3" and not "/dev/sdd". And to get that third partition you clone the partition table of he healty disk and sync the bootloader.

zpool list -v or zpool status should tell you what the ID of the failed vdev was.

Also keep in mind that your disk (WD40EFAX) isn't suited for ZFS. It's a SMR disk which shouldn't be used with ZFS. You need a CMR disk. So for example a WD "Red Plus" or WD "Red Pro" but no normal "WD Red".

What is ls -la /dev/disk/by-id now reporting? Does a third partition still exist?

ok i will read about SMR vs CMR disk, i was under impression for nas you need WD RED or iron wolf nas drive
 
seems like its gone, should i go ahead wipe disk

# sgdisk <healthy bootable device> -R <new device>
# sgdisk -G <new device>
# zpool replace -f <pool> <old zfs partition> <new zfs partition> - wrong syntax cmd
# proxmox-boot-tool format <new disk's ESP>
# proxmox-boot-tool init <new disk's ESP>

i formatted the disc again, and now resilvering process has begun,
