It's our pleasure to announce the stable version 7.0 of Proxmox Virtual Environment. It's based on the great Debian 11 "Bullseye" and comes with a 5.11 kernel, QEMU 6.0, LXC 4.0, OpenZFS 2.0.4. and countless enhancements and bugfixes.

Here is a selection of the highlights
  • Debian 11 "Bullseye", but using a newer Linux kernel 5.11
  • LXC 4.0, QEMU 6.0, OpenZFS 2.0.4
  • Ceph Pacific 16.2 as new default; Ceph Octopus 15.2 remains supported.
  • Btrfs storage technology with subvolume snapshots, built-in RAID, and self-healing via checksumming for data and metadata.
  • New ‘Repositories’ Panel for easy management of the package repositories with the GUI.
  • Single Sign-On (SSO) with OpenID Connect
  • QEMU 6.0 with ‘io_uring’, a clean-up option for un-referenced VM disks
  • LXC 4.0 has full support for cgroups2
  • Reworked Proxmox installer environment
  • ACME standalone plugin with improved support for dual-stacked (IPv4 and IPv6) environments
  • ifupdown2 as default for new installations
  • chrony as the default NTP daemon
  • and many more enhancements, bugfixes, etc.

A: Yes.

Q: Can I install Proxmox VE 7.0 on top of Debian 11 "Bullseye"?

Q: Why is Proxmox VE 7.0 released ahead of the stable Debian 11 release?
A: The Debian project team postponed their plans for the May release mainly due to an unresolved issue in the Debian installer. Since we maintain our own Proxmox installer, we are not affected by this particular issue, therefore we have decided to release earlier. The core packages of Proxmox VE are either maintained by the Proxmox team or are already subject to the very strict Debian freeze policy for essential packages.

Q: Can I upgrade my Proxmox VE 6.4 cluster with Ceph Octopus to 7.0 with Ceph Octopus or even Pacific?
A: This is a two step process. First, you have to upgrade Proxmox VE from 6.4 to 7.0, and afterwards upgrade Ceph from Octopus to Pacific. There are a lot of improvements and changes, so please follow exactly the upgrade documentation:

Congratulations as ever.
Maybe you should state here breaking changes about cgroupv2 , also do we need anything to rebuild except adding kernel parameter.

FYI: They are mentioned in the known-issues of the upgrade guide, with a link to the docs where some possible remedies are described. A short notice in the roadmap one won't hurt though, added now.
 
upgraded my old Playground at home from 6.4.x to 7.0-8 without any problem! Thanks to the Proxmox Team. After my vacation I will upgrade my servers at work.
 
Hello,
after succesfully upgrade from Proxmox VE 6.4 to 7.0 all grafics under node 'pve' / Summary (CPU usage, Server load etc.) are empty.

sorry, problem only with Firefox, Chrom is displaying all

I'm very excited about the btrfs support, and I have a question about it:
The btrfs wiki states, "Files with a lot of random writes can become heavily fragmented [...] This affects databases and virtual machine images. ". How does Proxmox handling this?

There are some plans to expose the nodatacow option for single disk instances for a future disk-managment interface in the GUI, it can naturally set already now manually.
For containers BTRFS is not used directly, we rather use ext4 images per default - which are (at least) as performant as sub-volumes for that use case, so there that won't matter much.
Similarly, for VMs you have the file-system layer of the guest OS in-between, so small single writes of a database workload in the guest do not necessarily impact the underlying storage in the same way.

Also, in the end, you as admin need to choose an underlying storage tech that supports your use case, different ones shine for different use cases, that's one of the big reasons for why Proxmox VE supports interfacing several storage technologies - if one would fit all perfectly we definitively would not bring all that work upon us ;)
So, if in evaluations it would show that BTRFS is not holding up as expected for your specific use case then you can always go for ZFS, XFS, ext4, or a shared highly-scalable storage like ceph. Note also that BTRFS is still in technology preview, so you really need to evaluate any use of it first.

We're working on releases for our other projects. Note that the Proxmox VE repository include the client themselves and already ship with a newer build for bullseye.

I'm ordering a new server to add to my stack, its AMD EPYC dual 32C/64T processors and 1TB RAM in Dell 7525, anyone have a similar setup? Any issues? I do see where Proxmox Backup Server agents are not ready for the new Debian kernal, guess I'll wait a little longer, as I use the PBS.

Congrats on the new release! I was about to install 6.4 on my new home server last night, but glad I waited a day!

Looking forward to the new features/upgrades :)

Yeah, the checker script is best-effort, reading the upgrade how-to closely is still a must, that's why there's also the following note in the check script section:
You should keep in mind that Proxmox VE can be heavily customized, so the script may not recognize all the possible problems with a particular setup!

As said, we're working on, it's ready when it's ready.
The Proxmox VE 6.x and the Proxmox Backup Server 1.x series will be still supported for about a year, so it's not like there's a high pressure to upgrade now immediately, waiting out a few days or weeks won't hurt.
