Proxmox VE 1.5 released [UPDATE]

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

All right, I'll try it tomorrow (no remote access) !
On the physical server there's only 2 W2K3 servers (poor services, but I have no choices).
My roadmap is to add a freeNas (OpenVZ) on the same PM to make backup of VM (due to issues with internal backup and restrictions with my network/hardware).
So my question is 2.6.32 or 2.6.24 (I think 2.6.24) ?
Another question (another thread perhaps) :
I have another new server with 2 Xeon Quad-Core, 96 GB Ram, and I've made 1 W2K8 server to make a scientific computing with Multi-Processors software (STATA11 MP) and when I look in the VM, I use 40-70% of CPU. When I look the proxmox interface, I see 9% CPU Usage...
I see 16 core due to the hyperthreading and I affect 2 sockets and 8 cores : is it the good config (I think no)...
I'll try to install an openvz ubuntu with the same software to see the diff and I'll reduce the job (actually 3 days but 6 on a dualcore) to make benchmarks but I must wait monday (we are waiting the results) !
Thanks again for your hard working and reactivity !

Hi,
if you want openvz you need 2.6.24 (or 2.6.18). But with freeNas you get no luck, becourse it's based on bsd (m0n0wall). So you can't use the same kernel and need a fully virtualizised machine (kvm).
FreeNas will later also build on linux, but that is the future.
I will be also not sure, if it's a good idea to run a nfs-server as openvz (if you need this feature of freeNas). I guess it will only work as userspace-nfsd.

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

Ok !
So I'll try the 2.6.32 kernel (there's two W2K3) and I've seen in the announcement :
Latest KVM with KSM (shares identical memory pages, especially useful when running multiple guests from the same or similar base operating system image. Because memory is shared, the combined memory usage of the guests is reduced)

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

debian install is now broken:
Code:
clu1:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian lenny main

# PVE packages provided by proxmox.com
deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian lenny pve

# security updates
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main
then
aptitude -y update && aptitude -y dist-upgrade && aptitude -y install pve-kernel
returns errors:
Code:
Impossibile trovare una versione candidata di pve-kernel
Impossibile trovare una versione candidata di pve-kernel
in english: no candidate versions for pve-kernel

i need to install pve on debian, because your standard installation media does not allow to custom partition machines...
i need to leave out the most space to use it as drbd...

Just updated the wiki, we have new package names due to different kernel branches.

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

Hi guys

Just to check

I got the proxmox-ve_1.5-4627.iso (MD5: d2806eb857f96f3fda1d73173860503e) in 20/01 via BT and tried to install in 2 servers, IBM X3650 and X3400 (both ran previous versions 1.[234] ok) - in both installer says "No Hard Disk found".

Booting with "vga=normal", i can see the raid module loaded (aacraid on x3650 - i forgot which on x3400 :)) and disks (/dev/sd[ab]). Boot with noapic/noacpi cheatcodes don't help.

I saw now on download wiki page the same ISO, but with different MD5 (9933270f21eebdd1fb8d2bdd2085d059) - this is a fix to that problem i related?

[]'s

Just uploaded a new ISO, fixes this issue.

KSM is really amazing! I suddenly have heaps of spare memory with Windows virtualisation. :)

Thanks Proxmox Team, you're doing great work!

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

maybe it's because all VMs are on different physical drives?
We have server with follow scheme:
Code:
VMID Physical Drive OS
101 0 SUSE11.2
102 1 Debian 5.0 amd64
103 2 RHEL5.4
104 1 Debian 5.0 amd64
105 0 Debian 5.0 amd64
106 3 Debian 5.0 amd64

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

I know :)
I mean maybe the disk cache of VMs is not the same, because this VMs is on another disks.
I'm just looking for the reason why ksm doesn't work as i would like to...
Now after reboot 3 of VMs i have:
s1:~# cat /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/pages_shared
26411
s1:~# cat /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/pages_sharing
97981
s1:~# cat /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/pages_unshared
1193748

There is 8Gb RAM o this server.

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

I've seen Ksm use a lot of ressource (cpu) when I make a top, but I have not delays in IO now, its a great avantage.
My use is two W2K3 on host Xeon 4core 2,33 Ghz with 4 GB Ram with services who listen and synchronize files with badges access control boxes (hardware) and the other one dynamical screening (I don't know if it's the goods words in english) : great screens in the hall, library, etc... with informations, videos and a mini-pc attached...
Or better (perhaps) : the server controls and synchronize datas with informations screens

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

mixing versions in a cluster is not supported.

using several 1.5 running different kernels is supported.

So what is the recommended way to upgrade the cluster without disruption of the virtuals? I imagined we will setup a new 1.5 server, join the 1.4 cluster, do a live migration of all KVM virtuals to this new server and upgrade the master to 1.5. Since mixing versions is not supported I don't see any clear sollution.

Re: Proxmox VE 1.5 released

stop the VM´s and upgrade all nodes, reboot. there is no way to keep the VM´s running - or at least I do not see it.
