I'm seeing the following error in the system logs"

Yes, Proxmox VE 3.x is out of support since 2/2017.

Thank you for the update. Is it possible to do a direct upgrade to the latest version? If so,could you let me know the steps involved or is there a KB article to do it?

Inplace upgrade from 3 to 5? No.
