Hello,

I would like to install Proxmox on my computer using zfs file system. Where could I find the instructions to do this.

Second question. Is it a good idea to do this or should I stay with ext4 for the promox and use zfs only for the VM and Conteners ?

Thank you for your help.

what is your hardware setup? particularly storage devices...

how do you see yourself using the system? home lab, media server, development, etc

I start with iMac 2011 32Go Ram and 1To SSD. And several external HD 10 To. I plan to add other hardware setup to make a cluster (3 at least). Another iMac and a PC (new). Each with 32 Go Ram and at least 1 To SSD.

VM and conteners with docker, nextcloud full time. A few others VM to come to play with.

Anyway if someone knows how to install zfs from scratch with proxmox, I would like to get the process.

What exactly is your problem with ZFS? You choose one of the ZFS raid options in the installer of the PVE ISO, maybe change some of the advanced options there (usually not required) and thats it. All other stuff is ZFS finetuning you can do any time later.

The bigger question is, if your hardware will work well with ZFS. You for example should avoid consumer SSDs, especially the ones with QLC NAND, ECC RAM would be beneficial if you want to trust the data integrity of checksumming, no hardware raid controller should be used and a lot of RAM would be beneficial.

When i choose the options files system during install, I only see raid zfs. But I would like to install zfs without raid. (because I'll have several machines in a cluster and no raid on each machine)
May be I have to choose "raid0" but for me this is a raid anyway. Do you think I have to use this choice ? (raid0)

After all what I saw on Internet, my hardware should work well with zfs (old iMac, PC and others). But my goal is to check if it's interesting or not too.

Yes, raid0 is what you want to choose with a single disk. But keep in mind that there will be no bit rot protection (only detection) with a single disk, in case you care about data integrity.

Yes, I know. But even without rot protection, there is the detection. And I hope to find a solution to monitor this to be alerted before problem happens.

By default ZFS scrubs only once per month, so you might only recognize it a month later. Make sure your backup retention is longer than 1 month.

Thank you for this information. Do you know about the possibility to set a different delay parameter to zfs to scrub ? Like one per day or per week for exemple.
Or any tools to do this outside of zfs.

You would need to create your own cronjob or systemd service initializing a scrub. Or edit the default service file.
