[SOLVED] Proxmox Hardware Change Question

I'm a complete beginner who hasn't even installed Proxmox yet. I'm currently considering whether to install it.
For the hardware where I plan to install Proxmox, I'm planning to change the memory and disk configuration within a month.
Therefore, I think it would be better to install Proxmox after changing the hardware. However, I would like to get familiar with Proxmox as soon as possible, so I'd prefer to try it out earlier.
So, I'd like to know if there would be any impact if I change the hardware configuration after I've already installed Proxmox with VMs running on it.

What changes do you have in mind?
  • You can add HDDs/NVMe/SSD after the fact usually without any problem. Exchanging the boot devices maybe (a little bit) tricky though.
  • You can add Network Interfaces after the fact without any problem.
  • After changing the Motherboard you possibly need to readjust names of devices - which can be puzzling for a beginner.
But yeah, adding new hardware without destroying the setup is feasible :-)

Hi @Sena

go now, Proxmox install is easy, and do not not worry, first installation is experimenting, in past I broke mine within hours. You can experiment with File Systems and split of partitions (ext4), Secure boot etc .. get to know how it works, it is fun. Regarding VMs you can anytime backup them on to external HDD or network storage. And at the end, you can use oportunity and experiment with HW update, more you test, more you know ;).

For example, our company lab polygon is constantly "broken" simulating customers scenarios.

Welcome to community :)

This is a very good point. I have in the past, wiped out one of my proxmox nodes (because I was changing hard drives), reinstalled proxmox and then proceeded to restore all my VMs from backup. I think the entire process of doing the backups, taking the machine down, installing new drives, re-installing Proxmox and restoring my VMs from backup (on an NFS share) took less than 60 minutes.

Thank you all for your responses!
Last night, I went ahead and installed Proxmox and played around with it.
Today, I added an SSD and some memory, and everything worked fine.
