Hi there.
I am very happy with my proxmox virtual servers!
We have a SAS External Backup Device, which connects to a SAS controller on one of my PVE 1.8 nodes.

Is there a way (please tell me how) to allow my Windows server 2008 to access this device?

I have search and only SAS headings I can find are relating to SAS drives

I've used iscsi initiator following these steps:
cat /proc/scsi_tgt/scsi_tgt |grep tape
5:0:0:0

I then added that in Windows Server 2008, which then added the iSCSI target from my PVE 1.8 server, but my device manager doesn't see/list any devices, nor does iscsi in windows "auto configure" any devices??

Hi,
i have only experience with an SAS-Jukebox to an OpvenVZ-VM (for bacula), this run very well.
AFAIK you must disable the driver for the drive on the host, so that the VM can use the device.

I used Symantec Backup Exec (latest) in some projects, you can just install the Linux Remote Media Agent on the Proxmox VE host and then you can use the drive for Backups. And you can also access the drive from any guest, I mean you can connect the physical drive on host A and you can run the Windows on host B. there is also no reconfiguration needed if you live-migrate your windows between hosts. Setup is very fast and easy, up and running in 5 minutes.

Thank you Tom, wonderful post.
I know backup exec well - the Windows side of it.
I will definitely follow your recommendation for larger clients, but the current client didn't want to expend more finances on purchasing Backup Exec.

I think I am nearly there in configuring it, will post my steps for future info!

You guys are doing a wonderful job.

Once some more projects spins off i really want to contribute financially in support.

Hi Tom, I followed this link for Proxmox, and it worked like a charm!
I had to do some manual searches, but this link is basically valid for SCSI and SAS tape drives - well done guys!

http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Tape_Drives

What I had to do/search manually, was from the top link, under "Using Tape Drives as SCSI pass through...", I ran "cat /sys/class/scsi_generic/sg0(..2)/device/model" and found under /sys/sg2 my device.

Then amended /etc/scst.conf to show:
[HANDLER tape]
DEVICE 5:0:0:0

[ASSIGNMENT Default]
DEVICE 5:0:0:0,0

Then just pointed my server 2008's iscsi to the ip of the host and there she was :-)

Thank you for your support, and hope this helps someone in the future!

Jeandre.
