Hi,

Proxmox 7.1 setup stucks on a new Dell Power Edge R7525 with:
  • 02 CPU AMD 7302 3GHz,16C/32T,128M,155W,3200
  • 128GB di RAM (04 x 32GB)
  • Controller PERC H755 SAS
  • Virtual Disk 01 = RAID 5 (04 x 600GB SAS 15K)
  • Virtual Disk 02 = RAID 5 (03 x 900GB SAS 15K)
Last messages before aborting the installation are:

"Starting chrony for opportunistic time sync... Starting a root shell on tty3 failed on installation"

In /var/log/Xorg.0.log I can read:

"Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting."

Tried on 04 different server with same configuration.

Does anyone have an idea what this might depend on?

cant speak to the x server aborting, but the io error on sdd appears more indicative of the cause. if you kill all the virtual disks and just present the HDDs to the OS, does the behavior change?

edit: 15k drives in 2022? can you even order that?!!

Thanks for the reply.

No the behavior does not change.

15k drives are a specific request ;)

ok, next step would be to boot a debian bullseye netinstall (https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-11.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso) and see if that works. IF it does, you'll probably be fine installing proxmox after the fact as described here: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_11_Bullseye

IF you're able to complete installation using this method, please open a bugzilla report to let the devs know the installer breaks on current gen Dell AMD servers and make sure to include the firmware (bios) rev; if it doesnt, time to contact dell support to see if they know how to deal with this matter- it may be a firmware issue.

Oh, whoever requested those drives is wrong. if you're in a fiduciary position, you should let them know. They're inferior in every way to even the most basic SAS SSD, eat more power, and since no longer manufactured will be limited to "questionable" replacements when they fail.

Finally after several tests I managed to install Proxmox, I report below what I did to do it.

1) Enter the BIOS configuration at startup (F2).
2) Change the following parameters.

In SYSTEM SETUP / MEMORY SETTINGS:

• Dram Refresh Delay: Minimum

In SYSTEM SETUP / PROCESSOR SETTINGS:

• Logical Processor: Disabled
• NUMA Nodes Per Socket: 4
• X2APIC Mode: Disabled

In SYSTEM SETUP / SATA SETTINGS:

• Embedded SATA: RAID Mode

In SYSTEM SETUP / BOOT SETTINGS:

• Hard-disk Drive Placeholder: Enabled

In SYSTEM SETUP / INTEGRATED DEVICES:

• SR-IOV Global Enable: Enabled

In SYSTEM SETUP / SYSTEM PROFILE SETTINGS:

• System Profile: Performance

In SYSTEM SETUP / SYSTEM SECURITY:

• TPM Security: On
• Secure Boot: Disabled

3) After saving the settings, create the RAID (if already present, delete previous configurations) and wait for their initialization to finish.

4) Restart the server with the pendrive, containing the Proxmox installer, inserted and let it start by itself, without manually selecting the device from which to boot.

5) Once the PROXMOX installation is complete, re-enter the BIOS (F2) and modify the following parameters as indicated.

In SYSTEM SETUP / PROCESSOR SETTINGS:

• Logical Processor: Enabled
• X2APIC Mode: Enabled

It's all.
