Hi,
I have problem pwith passthrough SATA controler to one vm and pcie USB3 to another vm. I using Supermicro H11DSi motherboard with AMD Epyc 7601 CPU and latest version of Proxmox. I have enabled IOMMU in BIOS and Im add "quiet amd_iommu=on" to systemd-boot file and reboot host.
Before Edit:
Code:
root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/pve-1 boot=zfs
After:
Code:
root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/pve-1 boot=zfs quiet amd_iommu=on

When I verify if IOMMU is enabled I see that it is not:
Code:
:~# dmesg | grep -e DMAR -e IOMMU

Device 25:00.2 I would like passthrough to one VM and device 03:00.0 to another VM.

If I add USB PCIe device(03:00.0) as pcie device to vm it normally start but VM do not detect any usbe device on ports.
If I add SATA device(25:00.2) to another VM then host go to reboot loop and I need in emergency add amd_iommu=off and after boot remove pcie device from vm...

Looks like IOMMU do not work because I don't receive line "DMAR: IOMMU enabled"... What I can check and make it work?
Thanks.

IOMMU is on and working in principle because you have multiple IOMMU groups. You don't even need amd_iommu=on because it is on by default. Did you make sure it is set to Enable (not just Auto) in the motherboard BIOS? Is ACS enabled? Do you have a link to the motherboard (BIOS) manual?
You really have everything in separate groups, which is a little suspect (like pcie_acs_override) but maybe it is normal for Epyc.

Maybe the USB device does not reset properly and you need to early bind it to vfio-pci. Or maybe it does not work with passthrough, it happens (a lot).
Maybe the SATA controller is not actually properly solated or does not work with passthrough in a violent way.
Try upgrading or downgrading the motherboard BIOS as that is the most influential on the IOMMU groups and passthrough.

Do you know of other people on the internet having success with those USB and SATA controller?
And as you already found out, it's usually not a good idea to automatically start VMs that use passthrough until everything is working.

Hi @leesteken later yesterday I'm search for this thread and has disappear from forum and also my profile(under my postings) ... This is happen second time that thread disappear for around half day and then appear back... I want update it that it start working. Why? I don't know... Maybe has been some issue because first I’m passthrough only two SATA disk's to VM and because truenas didn't see serial and also S.M.A.R.T. has return some errors I’m remove them and passthrough complete SATA controller. Then host itself reboot and go into reboot loop(Because I had AutoStart VM enabled) which I’m fix and investigate why this happen...

Later I’m try again add SATA as pcie passthrough and it after power on VM normally work and truenas has detect disk normally... I didn’t reboot host after that to se if it will produce some problems, but I have plan to do it in next days…

I’m found that also USB pcie card passthrough has work normally but device which I need to use do not work on USB 3 port(Some compatibility issue) when I’m connect UPS over USB it has been detected immediately... Looks like I need to found USB 2.0 PCI-e card or use some USB 2.0 HUB to get it working but this is not proxmox problem…

Main problem has been that Proxmox Wiki said that I must get "DMAR: IOMMU enabled" line which indicate that IOMMU work but looks like this is not true… By default is IOMMU in BIOS disabled and I’m Enable it(Didn’t select Auto) because I know that I need enable it to do this…

About pcie_acs_override I didn't enable it. If I run command I see that is enabled:
Code:
:~# dmesg | grep 'remapping'
[ 0.504125] AMD-Vi: Interrupt remapping enabled

Code:
:~# cat /etc/modprobe.d/iommu_unsafe_interrupts.conf
cat: /etc/modprobe.d/iommu_unsafe_interrupts.conf: No such file or directory

My system-boot /etc/kernel/cmdline now looks like this:
Code:
root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/pve-1 boot=zfs quiet amd_iommu=on

Hi @leesteken later yesterday I'm search for this thread and has disappear from forum and also my profile(under my postings) ... This is happen second time that thread disappear for around half day and then appear back...
Maybe your long texts over multiple posts was detected as spam and needed a forum moderator to approve. I noticed it when I wanted to help you but it disappeared.

Sounds like this problem, which was solved by early binding the USB controller to vfio-pci. It's probably a reset issue that is work-around by not letting the Proxmox host touch it before the VM.

Indeed this is only true for Intel systems. Someone needs to fix that Wiki someday.

Yes, you need to enable in the BIOS. But you do not need amd_iommu=on.
About pcie_acs_override I didn't enable it. If I run command I see that is enabled:

pcie_acs_override is not the same as unsafe interrupts but that does not matter because I think you don't need either of them.
