I have been using proxmox for a while now. I have a two node cluster set up with drbd lvm based vm disks, shared between the two. I have always used KVM fully virtualized, but I wanted to give openvz a try for my linux based VM's. However, openvz is not an option when I create a new VM. I have searched a while but can't find any information on why that would be.

i guess wrong kernel.
You need an kernel with openvz-support (the "new" 2.6.32 is the right one).

I am on the latest kernel. I have done all updates to proxmox 1.9.

perhaps you have switched off openvz with "VIRTUOZZO=no" in /etc/vz/vz.conf ??

You're right! I hadn't done a

 aptitude safe-upgrade

in a while. I have only done

 aptitude upgrade

I will have to wait until tonight to restart both nodes. Thanks for the help everyone! I will report back if it's still not working for some reason.

I restarted the node and voila, I have openvz available under the create option. Thank you everyone.
