Noob help needed

I just put Proxmox on my HP Microserver 8 on the internal SD card. I then installed a new 500gb SATA drive. I have read everything I can find, but I can't seem to find a noob tutorial on partitioning/formatting this new drive, and then adding it to Proxmox. Can anyone help me with a simple tutorial of some sort?
