Network speed drops to 10kb

Hi,

I've got a really strange error.. I'm copying VMID's from one metal box to another, and initially the speed of the destination is like 1.5mb.. after appx. 5secs the speed starts to drop, and eventually stays below 10kb.

Why?

This is a sun x4100, I have all 4nics with static ip's, and VMBR0 is tied to NIC1..

Any ideas, help, suggestions is appreciated!

I'm no expert, but it may be related to the BMC network card using intel drivers. here is the output of modinfo e1000e

I've tried both SCP and RSYNC.. I'm transferring a backup (tar.gz)..

I've tried changing the duplex with ethtool..

It will start to copy from the host to the server in question at about 3mb and then quickly drop to below 10kb.. then, after some seconds (15 or so) it will start to go back up.. then back down.. this is a sun x4100.

I have reinstalled proxmox to see if that would help, same problem.

I'd be grateful for any ideas any one may have, I've googled the heck out of this and there is talk about kernel timing. The closest I found to my problem is this : http://communities.vmware.com/thread/82544 but I could be way off here..

Anyway, thank you.

Anyone?

Can I pay PROXMOX for support on this? I have to get these servers working.

We have no such machine here so if you can manage to move such a server to our test lab for testing and debugging we can try to find something.

I do not have good connection to the local Sun dealer here in Austria/Germany but as you are a Sun customer you can trigger them to send us a test server for debugging.

I can't, but I could give you remote access and be hands on in the event you need something done.

I installed Debian on the server, and the speed problem went away, so this is a PROXMOX problem.

So it's clearly a network driver error.

Is there ANYONE that can give me a hand with this, tell me how to replace the network driver or any other assistance?

I've always had such prompt and useful assistance in the past.. is this an uncorrectable problem and I need to abandon the 5 servers I bought or do I need to abandon Proxmox? :(

Any assistance or advice is appreciated.

Which driver version is used on Debian standard, which is used on Proxmox VE?

I don't know. I'm just reporting what I found and asking someone that knows about these things to help me.

I don't have the speed fluctuations with Debian install but I do with Proxmox install.

Thank you!

Hi,
we have an X4100 with ubuntu 8.04. The NIC make no trouble (with an without vlan-tagging).
The module ist the normal e1000.
I can't test the server with Proxmox, because we need them.
But perhaps a lspci helps:

Hey,
the version of the ubuntu e1000 is:
Code:
modinfo e1000
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-server/kernel/drivers/net/e1000/e1000.ko
version: 7.3.20-k2-NAPI
license: GPL
description: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver
author: Intel Corporation, <linux.nics@intel.com>
I should update the server in the next time ;)

@vzfanatic: are you sure that the problem are not on the switch-side? Perhaps try another switch or other networksettings on the port?!
