Given that Proxmox can be installed inside a third party hypervisor (see Nested Virtualization - Proxmox VE ) how should I calculate the number of physical sockets in order to purchase the right subscription?

Should I count all the physical sockets of the hypervisor (even if they server lots of other VMs) or should I count the vCPUs assigned to the guest Proxmox server?

Regards

since PVE only sees the sockets assigned to it, you can just assign e.g. one socket and use a single socket subscription

note that for best performance you probably should match the host architecture to the guest (this depends a bit on the hypervisor though)

note that we in generally don't recommend running PVE in a virtual environment besides testing, but our support will still try to help you (if it's subscribed) on a best effort basis (we can't guarantee it works properly with every other hypervisor as a guest for example)
