When I run vmware that is not so many option like that is in proxmox.
That is so much to pick that I'm not sure I do it right and have not find any good tutorial.

That I have done now is on a HP server I have create a hardware RAID 5 for 4 SSD harddrive.
I did try first to use LVM of the RAID 5 but it did feel slow and did get me error when I did try to install Windows server

I did then remove and everything that belong to RAID 5 and did try again after another guide.
I did format my RAID to ext4 and mount it on a folder and then use Directory in proxmox.

Right now it works fine but not sure if this is a good idea :)

hi,

it's alright to store it in directory storage, but be aware that you're giving up on a lot of benefits that other storage types can bring you [0]

Thanks for the replay
Well I have look in the table before and I don't see any major benefits I going to miss.

then i suggest you to look at the separate pages for the storage types [0]

for example with ZFS [1] you get many benefits such as compression, self-healing and encryption (also snapshots, which is missing in directory storage).

the table is for general overview and doesn't go into much detail, but there are definitely benefits to be gained from other storage types than directory

Hmm yes I have read about ZFS
But I run servern with a hardare RAID and when I read this
"Do not use ZFS on top of a hardware RAID controller which has its own cache management. ZFS needs to communicate directly with the disks."
then I'm not sure.

Maybe is wrong way to do but if I start use directory at first and later install proxmox on my labserver I then can try diffrent storage until I find some I like and then export VM to that storage.
Right now i just trying to make my friends server up and running so he can use it.
I was just afraid that install VM om directory storage is stupid idea :)

yes i just gave it as an example. it's not recommended to use it in conjunction with hardware raid. though there are still other storage types you can use -- you could also add these if you have more disks later or if your current setup starts showing its drawbacks
