[workaround found] Installation stops with "ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)

Hello,

my installation of PVE stops with "ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16) on an Intel DQ45CB mobo with 2 HDDs (with "AHCI" mode) attached and 4 GB.
When I use "IDE" mode, it also stops, but without above error. Instead, the error reads "modprobe: failed to load module i915: unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter" - "searching for cdrom".
Any hints? Thank you!

EDIT: solution in reply further below (installed Debian Squeeze and on top PVE 1.8)

things to check:
  • which Proxmox ISO image do you use?
  • update mainboad bios
  • run a memory test, probably a ram issue.
  • which cd-rom do you use? try another one, e.g. a external USB drive
  • can you install Debian Squeeze without issues (use this iso)?

Hi Tom,

I used the latest PVE 1.8-6070-5 ISO image, and the MD5sum was ok, too.
The latest Intel BIOS 129 available for my DQ45CB is already installed.
The memory test did not reveal any errors.
I use an external (USB 2.0) NEC CD/DVD burner, which works ok for the installation of Ubuntu or Debian.
I had installed Debian 6.0.2.1 (64bit) via a small CD image for installation via network with the above mentioned CD/DVD burner, and that worked, too.
Shall I use that Debian and try to Install Proxmox VE on that Debian Squeeze?
The link explains it for Lenny, but it should work like that for Squeeze, too, right?

No, Proxmox VE 1.8 is based on Lenny and only tested on Lenny. Some users installs on top of Squeeze and reports no big issues but this is NOT recommended.

You can try to install a Debian Lenny and on top Proxmox VE as described in the wiki.

Hi,

I have now first installed Debian Squeeze and on top of that PVE 1.8. And it works flawlessly - after switching to the PVE kernel, of course.
