Guest Software RAID 1

I've been using Linux on various PCs as a home server over the years, and now when it's time to retire the old PC and replace it with a somewhat newer, I decided to use proxmox.

The old Linux PC had two physical disks in a RAID 1 configuration (mdadm) that I've put in the new server running proxmox.

With a virtual Linux as a guest I think I have two choices:
  • Let the proxmox server handle the s/w RAID using mdadm and export /dev/md0 to the guest using virtio
  • Just export the two physical disks using separate virtios to the guest and let the guest run mdadm and RAID 1
I'm not sure both alternatives will work, but if they do, which one should I choose?

I would recommend to let your Proxmox server handle the RAID and export that as storage.

With this, you can run multiple VMs on the same storage if you want, or easily migrate your VM to another storage location.
