My server was originally running proxmox 1.8 happily on a megaraid 8344ELP,
however after installing new megaraid 9240-8i (due to 6gbps support) and imported the raid array+configurations, proxmox boot up now shows:

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (0K lower / 0K upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename. ]

and nothing seems to work. I am pretty sure the raid configurations were correct and data are intact.
Lsi web says debian lenny is supported for this card. What could be the issue then?

Hi,
is the disk-order in the bios right? Perhaps you must choose them again.
Also in the raid-bios? Normaly check first the settings in raid-bios, than in server-bios.

Do you have other HDDs than raidvolumes? (because bootblock and device ordering).

sorry for the confusion, the kernel I am using is: pve-kernel-2.6.32-5-pve: which is kernel 2.6.32-36 ?
That should have the driver support, but didn't work out.

I just did a deeper look on the current released kernels and also on the new one which will be released in a few days (to pvetest). looks like this one the right driver.?

Current stable:
Code:
uname -a

2.6.32-4-pve #1 SMP Mon May 9 12:59:57 CEST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

modinfo megaraid_sas

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.32-4-pve/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_sas.k o
description: LSI MegaRAID SAS Driver
author: megaraidlinux@lsi.com
version: 00.00.04.01

Current pvetest:
Code:
uname -a

2.6.32-5-pve #1 SMP Wed Aug 3 07:36:31 CEST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

modinfo megaraid_sas

version: 00.00.04.01
Upcoming pvetest:
Code:
uname -a

2.6.32-6-pve #1 SMP Wed Aug 31 17:10:52 CEST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

modinfo megaraid_sas

hmmm....

ubuntu 10.04.2 comes with megaraid driver 4.01 too and it did not work as well.
however centOS 5.4 comes with megaraid driver 4.08-RH2 and it works perfectly fine.

I belive the issue is with driver 4.01, i can't wait to test your upcoming 2.6.32-6-pve!! :D

yes, we try to push the 2.6.32-6-pve kernel asap to pvetest.

I just booted up a 2.6.18er kernel, here is the driver info:

Code:
uname -a

2.6.18-6-pve #1 SMP Mon May 9 13:27:11 CEST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

modinfo megaraid_sas

Hi Tom,

I just tried downgrading to proxmox-ve-2.6.18,
however the system went offline and could not connect to network after installing proxmox-ve-2.6.18 and reboot.
Could be lack of network driver support for my system?

I then quickly switched back to proxmox-ve-2.6.32.
Perhaps I should wait for the upcoming release in order to use the megaraid 9240

Ok. i just tried swaping to the new 6gbps megaraid 9240-8i on the disk array with proxmox-ve-2.6.18 installed.

Same problem as the other proxmox kernel version, boot up stops at:

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (0K lower / 0K upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename. ]

One intresting fact about downgrading to proxmox-ve-2.6.18, on my old megaraid 8344elp raid 0 I am able to achive slight higher FSYNC/S consistantly perhaps due to it's newer driver.

On proxmox-ve-2.6.32:
FSYNCS/SECOND: 2241.50

On proxmox-ve-2.6.18:
FSYNCS/SECOND: 2368.50

the new kernel with the newer megaraid-sas is ready for testing, see the announcement from today.

Hi Tom,

While on the old Megaraid 8344ELP, I updated all proxmox modules and kernel to 2.6.32-6-pve

server:~# modinfo megaraid_sas
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.32-6-pve/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_sas.ko
description: LSI MegaRAID SAS Driver
author: megaraidlinux@lsi.com
version: 00.00.05.34-rc1

server:~# uname -a
Linux server 2.6.32-6-pve #1 SMP Tue Sep 6 11:12:47 CEST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

server:~# pveversion -v
pve-manager: 1.8-22 (pve-manager/1.8/6531)
running kernel: 2.6.32-6-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.32: 1.8-41
pve-kernel-2.6.32-5-pve: 2.6.32-36
pve-kernel-2.6.32-6-pve: 2.6.32-41
qemu-server: 1.1-31
pve-firmware: 1.0-13
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-19
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.28-1pve5
vzdump: 1.2-15
vzprocps: 2.0.11-2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1
pve-qemu-kvm: 0.15.0-1
ksm-control-daemon: 1.0-6

But after swaping the raid controller to the new Megaraid 9240 the boot up still shows:

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (0K lower / 0K upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename. ]

This controller should work well on megaraid driver 5.34.
I thought of pluging in both the new and old raid controller, while booting up on the old raid see if lspci detects both the raid controller, but my system only has 1 pcie slots :(

But after swaping the raid controller to the new Megaraid 9240 the boot up still shows:

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB

The kernel is not even loaded at that time - seem to be a problem in the BIOS - the BIOS cant find the disks?

Strangely the raid BIOS works perfectly showing me I had foreign array configurations and allow me to import them.
It is able to read and configure all the hard disk too.

Ok, the issue is definately not due to kernel and drivers,
I am suspecting it may be far more complicated hardware compatibility issue since grub indicated (0K lower / 0K upper memory).

I will do another test on my new sandy bridge e3 system arriving in 2 weeks time.
