Hi, I am new to Proxmox and need to create a VM from a very lightweight debian distro to run a Wireguard server only and found Ubuntu 20.04 Minimal to be sufficiently lightweight while being familiar for me since I have been using Ubuntu for a while.

However, when I uploaded the Ubuntu 20.04 Minimal ISO image (ubuntu-20.04-minimal-cloudimg-amd64.img) to Proxmox using the web interface and created a new VM from it, it simply restarts continuously after showing the error message "No bootable device. Retrying in 1 second..." on the POST screen. (Did not manage to capture this error message in the attached screenshot).

Came across a post suggesting to rename the image file ubuntu-20.04-minimal-cloudimg-amd64.img into ubuntu-20.04-minimal-cloudimg-amd64.qcow2. I renamed it on my computer (not Proxmox) and tried to upload using the Proxmox web interface, but it wont accept a file with the .qcow2 extension.

I also tried uploading the file with the .img extension to Proxmox machine, then SSH in to rename it to a .qcow (/var/lib/vz/template/iso/ubuntu-20.04-minimal-cloudimg-amd64.qcow2) but this file cannot be found in the Proxmox web interface.

What can we do to create the Ubuntu 20.04 Minimal VM? Thank you!

Hey,

first of all if you're looking for a lightweight server, ubuntu with desktop is definitely the last thing you want to consider. I'd recommend a basic installation of ArchLinux(idle <100MB ram) and if you don't feel comfortable leaving debian based distros CentOS or Debian without desktop.

When setting up a VM you need an ISO file, you can get that from the distro website. That ISO file has to be uploaded to your PVE Node(HowToUpload). During the creation process you'll be asked to select an ISO image, select the one you just uploaded. Now you can start the VM and you should be thrown into the installation process of the distrobution you chose.

Distros mentioned:
  1. https://www.archlinux.org/
  2. https://www.centos.org/
  3. https://www.debian.org/index.en.html

Different in any iso that is working. I've tried now with same .iso, and it is not booting in Proxmox. Same error.

Could you please post a screenshot of the "Confirm" tab after you finished configuring the VM.
