Hi guys!

I'm completeley new to the world of Proxmox and home assistant (which should be running on my proxmox later). Unfortunately I run into problems after the first steps of setting up an home assistant server: I cannot access my proxmox server via web GUI.

First i checked my router (Telekom Speedport Smart 4). My old NAS and all other currently available network connections are displayed, but not the HP elitedesk with proxmox that I set up.

Then I tried some other LAN cables to check if the cable was faulty - neither of the cables solved my problem.

After that I tried to use an USB-C to RJ45 adaptor to check if the network hardware of my refurbished Elitedesk is faulty - still no listing of the computer in the router device list. The LEDs of the RJ45 are on constant green with the adaptor. Using the mainboard connector, additionally the red light is blinking.

Next I checked the network connection in BIOS. According the system check, the connection works. Whats strange is that there is another IPv4 address mentioned than the one I used for the Proxmox installation:
--> Proxmox was set up with IP CIDR: 192.168.0.242/24 & Gateway 192.168.0.1 & DNS 192.168.0.1
--> BIOS network check mentions IPv4: 192.168.2.176 & Gateway 192.168.2.1 & DNS 'automatic'

I also tried to ping the IP via another PC which also didn't work.

After reading about a pretty similar problem here https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/netzwerkkonfiguration-für-proxmox.132971/, I also checked the results of ip a, cat /etc/network/interfaces, systemctl status pveproxy.service pvedaemon.service and curl https://localhost:8006 -k | grep title but to be honest, I cannot find an answer with that on what to do next.

Are there any suggestions out there, what I can check and try to get the system running? Do I need to change some BIOS settings?

Best,

There is no physical connection. Both "eno" and "vmbr0" are reporting "state DOWN"! (It must be "state UP" for both.)

Check your cable, replace it; look at the "link"-LED - it should signal a connection.

Remove the cable and plug it in again. On both sides, one after another. While doing this watch "journalctl -f " in a root shell - you should recognize messages regarding the network connectivity...

Hi Udo,

so far I've done that several times, also using other cables. Nothing helped.

I also used the longer cable which I'm using right now to run my NAS and it worked perfectly.

At the moment I'm installing windows to check if the connection works with that or if there might be a broken network card in the PC. I also reset the BIOS settings to default so there is no chance of a messed up setting from my side.

I guess if that still doesn't work out, I have to find a third network cable to give it a try, also watching the status with "journalctl -f".

Thanks so far!

UPDATE:

After installing Windows on the Elitedesk, I had no problems using the LAN connection for surfing. But still, the red lamp is blinking at a low rate while the green one is constantly on. Also the windows PC is now listed in my Speedport router settings.

Any suggestions what I need to do to get the proxmox running? I guess the windows test shows that there is no general problem with my hardware?

Hi Udo and kolbycheesey,

I first installed a WLAN PCIe card for additional possible connections as a fallback. I just wanted to take advantage of the now installed Windows to check if the card works or not. Both, LAN and WLAN work properly with windows.

Then I updated BIOS to the latest version.

Next, I downloaded the proxmox ISO installer a second time, just to be 100% sure there are no problems with those files. After that, I used balenaEtcher to create the flash medium and installed proxmox again.

The results of journalctl -f were the following:
Journalctl.jpeg

The results of cat /etc/hosts were the following:
cat.jpeg

As I have tried about 5 additional installs of proxmox, I think I have a problem with my router or its settings. It seems like having problems with identifying the correct gateway why I tried once to adjust the pre-filled gateway to the standard gateway of the Speedport router (192.168.2.1) but without positive outcome :(

I took a picture of the screen which is displayed only once during the installtion process and got those network information:
Installation.jpeg

During that installation procedure, proxmox suggested me the following IP addresses which don't seem right as its a IPv6?:

Update - I got the problem solved:
After recognizing, that there is some trouble in automatically detecting the Gateway IP, I checked the standard IP of the Speedport (router) and also checked in which range the IPv4s are assigned. I chose one IP which is within that range and now it works. I still don't understand, why I had to manually choose the gateway but at least now I can continue on my joueney in the world of proxmox and smarthome.

Thanks so far for the ideas and support!
