Cluster setup

Hi all,

I'm a little bit confused with the cluster setup and I would like to ask if the following scenario is possible.

I've got 3 proxmox servers all runnning on different data centers. I just need to manage them from one address as cluster does.
Is it possible or all of them need to be on same network/subnet?

Hi,
in an cluster all member must be in the same subnet (multicast - see here: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Multicast_notes ).

But there are examples to use an openvpn-network for that: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Configu...uster_running_over_a_private_OpenVPN_intranet

If I'm right, there are people in this forum which run such a config in production.

If you prefer a decentralized VPN over a centralized one I would recommend you take a look at http://myatus.com/p/poor-mans-proxmox-cluster/. I have used this approach in the past to create a cluster (no HA) of servers that were hosted over at Hetzner (Germany) and OVH (France) and everything worked just fine.

fkh, I can't find on Internet how to create a failover setup with Tinc. Do you aware any link/docs?

I'm planning to have a cheap dedicated server with just the Tinc installed and configured and another one to act as a failover in case the drive fails etc on the 1st one.

Also one more question please. What is happening in case that the VPN server is down due to hardware fault? I wont be able just to do anything via the web interface or the VMs will be not accessible at all on Internet?

Both VPN guides/links posted above saying about dummy interface under /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/ but in my latest 3.* proxmox none of the nodes has any dummy interface on it.
Even if I run the suggested command "echo "options dummy numdummies=2" > /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf" and then reboot the server still no dummy interface.
All it has is:

root@proxmox0:~# ls /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/
all default eth0 eth1 lo venet0 vmbr0

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi mueslo,

I dropped the cluster setup after a while as it gave me some issues and just kept using the singe nodes setup.
