Broadcom Tigon3 "tg3" ethernet driver in Proxmox kernel is buggy or old

The tg3 driver included in the Proxmox VE kernel for Broadcom Tigon3 ethernet occasionally crashes out with:

Code:
DMA Status error. Resetting chip.

Usually the interface comes back after a few seconds. Sometimes it doesn't, and the system must be rebooted.

This is the exact bug described in the Red Hat knowledge base, here:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/69382

The solution is to simply update the kernel, however, the "fixed" version is old, from 2012.

I don't know why the current VE kernel is broken, but, could this be investigated?

Indeed... why is this not fixed yet? Multiple threads about TG3 issues exist already on this forum.
I'm getting tired of either crashing TG3 drivers or unresponsive broadcom network interfaces.

Or is there a better driver available that can replace TG3?
