I'm attempting to resurrect an old PC and dip my toes into the Proxmox waters. I've run into a snag at the very beginning of this and have tried several solutions to no avail.

The issue:
Immediately after the 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' message the screen goes black and nothing happens.

The hardware:
  • AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
  • MSI 970A-G45
  • 8GB DDR3
  • Radeon 6870 / GTX 980 (tried both)
The installation media:
A 16GB Sandisk Cruzer flash drive. I've used both etcher and rufus (both iso and dd mode, declining the grub update as well as accepting it) using both the proxmox 6.3-1 and 6.2-1 media.

Things I've tried:
  1. The following in grub params, individually and mixed:
    • nomodeset
    • acpi_backlight=vendor
    • amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.dpm=0 with my radeon cards
    • nouveau.noaccel=1 with my nvidia card
  2. Different versions of Proxmox (6.3-1 and 6.2-1)
  3. UEFI w/ CSM, UEFI no CSM, Legacy
  4. I initially was using an HD 6870, I swapped it for another 6870, and then swapped it to a GTX 980
  5. Booted off a single stick of RAM
  6. Booted off the USB in a different system (an intel build using integrated graphics) to ensure the USB isn't faulty
  7. Same ISO images on a different USB stick
It's worth noting that this machine does boot into Windows fine without issue, I don't think there's a bad piece of hardware. I am able to boot with a live lubuntu image.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: On a whim I grabbed a RAM stick from a different PC and tried it. The installer progressed past where it had been stuck and I am successfully tinkering with Proxmox.

Sorry to kick an old thread in the but the EDIT is bugging me so much I made an account.
You say on a whim, which leads me to believe the initial error did not tell you as much as it meant to tell you.
For those who stumble upon this in their struggles and this fixes it, there is a deep underlying reason that is barely touched in the edit.
As per the poster:

The issue:
Immediately after the 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' message the screen goes black and nothing happens.

The fix:
EDIT: On a whim I grabbed a RAM stick [DIMM] from a different PC and tried it. The installer progressed past where it had been stuck and I am successfully tinkering with Proxmox.

The initial issue actually pointed directly to the issue in an indirect manner. The ramdisk is the initial population of memory for the systems initial memory state to begin executing from. In this case, the odds are that DIMM OP replaced was damaged in some way and was likely one of the first DIMMS in the channel and the first on the bus (Ie: Ch. A DIMM 1). The best way to verify this is a memory test suite that writes to each byte in memory and checks the writes to ensure they worked, and then clears it and checks that the clear worked. Odds are, you'll come across a byte that will turn on, or won't turn off.
The solution of replacing the DIMM was the correct solution. Once a DIMM is damaged, it is costly to repair and in most cases it is most likely trash until you find someway to work around the broken parts.
