So I use gzip to as the backup format for all my containers when saving them into tar files, but I also noticed a "vzdump-lxc*-.tmp" directory found in /var/lib/vz/dump and stood out amongst all the ".tar.gz" files so I am wondering what this is, and why is it a directory unlike the tar files found in this directory.

This was a temporary Backup-File. During the Backup your PVE copy the Data of the Container. After that, the Server starts the comparission and delete then the temporary file.

just as i suspected, but this dated back several months ago, perhaps there was an error in the backup process that it was left unfinished and still exists there?

It sure is possible that there was some error and the cleanup did not happen properly. If you still have the corresponding .log file from that time you might even see some output in there if you want to check.

alright, is it safe to delete it then? and start another backup from there?

Yes. Most likely the contents are incomplete anyway. (Sorry for the late reply.)
