This should be working without any hassle. I used your setup for the exact same reason. I do though experience some instabilities since I upgraded to VirtualBox v7. Maybe the late VirtualBox v6 could be an option.

Did you do sudo update-grub after changing /etc/default/grub ?

This was fixed for the ASUS P9D WS with BIOS release 2104 from 03/13/2015 (dated 11/26/2014).
