Proxmox VE Shared Storage Advice

Hello everyone,

I am building a Proxmox based VE and I am looking for advice and opinion on shared storage. My objective for this virtual environment is to have a shared storage across a cluster of Proxmox nodes in order to achieve a migration of VMs in case of failure. Currently I am looking at two options and I was wondering which one is better in terms of maintenance, support, future expansion, data integrity, etc.

1) The first option is building a ZFS storage and connecting it to the cluster over iSCSI. In this case what raid would be appropriate several RAID-Z striped across the pool?

2) The second option is using a hardware RAID (for example RAID50) and shared NFS storage on top of it.

Any recommendations?

ultimately it depends on your use-case, but generally speaking ZFS and RAIDZ are better than traditional RAID in almost all respects (if it's tuned nicely)

unless something goes horribly wrong and you can't mount the ZFS pool. in this case it's more straightforward to recover from traditional RAID :)
