SATA vs IDE difference / performance

What are the differences between IDE and SATA in proxmox? What about performance?

VirtIO seems to have issues with windows update, so i'm considering switching to one of the above.

IDE and SATA are both emulated.
If you have problems with Windows use iscsi.
this has the best performance beside virtio.

But switching the storage bus on a installed Windows can make problems.

Use *scsi*, not *iscsi*.

SATA live migrations works now.

The Windows update that virtIO has difficulty with was an optional update for me called:
SUSE - Storage Controller - SUSE Block Driver for Windows

As long as you avoid this optional update you should be fine with virtIO. At least, this has been my experience with Windows 2012 virtual machines.

I always backup before applying windows updates (especially optional ones).
