hello
the Board Supermicro X11SCL-LN4F (i thinks to use it with 64 RAM) would on the side for proxmox be something against!
And what cpu would be sugestied for a small home use with couple of VM's?

and which cpu would be recommended?

have a nice day

The board should be fine. If you want more bang for the buck check out this board from ASRock which will take a normal (desktop) AMD Ryzen CPU but has IPMI and ECC support (UDIMM).

Regarding CPU it is hard to make a recommendation without knowing how many VMs and how CPU intensive they will be. A Ryzen 3700x is possibly a good compromise in the middle.

Depended on usecase the usual recommendation is that the number of cores is more important than the max clock speed of the cores. This is the CPU used at DigitalOcean: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 v4 @ 2.20GHz. 12 cores and 24 threads. Another option to take into consideration is TDP.

@narrateourale Thanks for your feedback
your CPU is more in my Pricerange ;-)
but the Board - can't find theme in switzerland https://www.toppreise.ch/
i will have around 12 VM which are not allways used

@mir Thanks for your feedback too
i am sure the CPU is good but i will not aford it!
i will have around 12 VM which are not allways used (This CPU(s) 4 x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570T CPU @ 2.90GHz (1 Socket)) is on my "old" Proxmox.
and i belive the cpu feels bored!

have a nice day

Ryzen processors are interesting, however I worry about migrating between Intel & AMD, so I have everything on Intel today, I move to AMD in three years, then move back to Intel during the next move. Will my Windows & Linux vms function as expected?

It might take a bit of searching. Even on www.geizhals.at there are times when there is not one seller who has it. It varies though and if you look into buying outside of Switzerland you should be able to find one. Not sure on how the taxes will be, even when bought within the EU, you know, Schengen and so on ;)

That is a valid concern. AFAIK there are sometimes Issues when live migrating VMs between different CPU architectures. A migration with the VM being shutdown, migrated and then booted up again should work fine.

High frequency is always good but if you are running an application that is incapable of using multiple cores, a high frequency is the only way to get performance. Software that utilizes more cores is much more efficient, much more than high frequency.

@syfy323 Merci - i will do it like that ;-)
so the cpu it self would be ok for proxmox?
Most if not all CPUs work with virtualization. I'm running CPUs <3GHz in production, so yes, it works.
It depends on how much you want to overprovision your CPUs and how your load is distributed (idle VMs vs. high-load VMs.).
