I would like to share my experience if someone else has this problem:
I wanted to update my Windows Server VM to the newest VirtIO version. I downloaded the iso from here and added it to my VM.
Snapshotted it to be on the safe side.
After starting the installation/upgrade process the progress bar didn't do anything and I had to roll back.
Tried this approach several times without any success.
What helped was to manually upgrade the network and SCSI driver via Windows "Device Manager" (search new driver manually and point it to the iso drive).
After that I rebooted and the general update process happend without any problem.
