Vmware Migration to Proxmox 4.2

guys please help the new noob

i want to use Proxmox 4.2 and have been playing with it however i need help on migrating a 1TB Vmware " ms2008.vmdk " File to a New Proxmox 4.2 Server.

I have done the following as per youtube
i have also done the following to try and get it to work however without any success

Use scp or an USB and copy it to “ /var/lib/vz/images/<VM Number>/image.vmdk “

then use


qemu-img convert -f ms2008.vmdk -O qcow2 ms2008.qcow2


NB: Use the default naming for virtual disk names. e.g. the first disk of VM 100 should be named to:

vm-100-disk-1.vmdk

NB: THERE IS NO FOLDER CALLED 100 IN " /var/lib/vz/images/?? "

i do have the " ms2008.qcow2 " file

i need to know where to copy the file to into Proxmox 4.2 and what other requirements there are to start the vm.

I have created the Proxmox VM with the exact Same Spec as the Vmware Spec.

any help greatly appreciated

A default 4.2 installation does use ThinLVM, therefore you do not see an image folder.

=> you need to create a directory based storage for images, then you can use this imported disk image.

and as soon as you see it on the GUI, you can also "move" this with one click to the ThinLVM.

or must i do " Datacentre " > " Storage " > " LVM " ?

or must i do " Datacentre " > " Storage " > " LVM -Thin" ?

or must i do " Datacentre " > " Storage " > " ZFS " ?

Please recommend your choice.

I do not know your server (hardware) and your setup, so I do not know.

You need at least a directory with enough space for this 1 TB vmdk file for the move and if you want to move this to your thin LVM, also on this.

I think you should re-read the wiki about storage again.

You need to understand the difference between LVM and mounted filesystems, then you answer your questions easily.

This page refers to proxmox 2.0 and talks of ZFS in 3.4 "beta state". Not so useful. Wondering how to install an existing qcow2 vm image for prox 4.3
