In the book Mastering Proxmox, it talks about storing & running the VMs on a FreeNAS server.

Is it possible to use a Synology NAS server instead of FreeNAS?

Hi,

Yes it is!

At least via nfs. I haven't tried iSCSI on Syno for such project, but nfs is OK.

Syno is rock solid, we use it for backups (vzdump) without any issue.

I use QNAP ts809/ts879 since years, both nfs, iscsi.
Reliable for my workload and case. Of course a good tested firmware helps, on the NAS.

Hi,

Syno for backups yes, and for production storage Dell md3220i, hp p2000 iscsi, equallogic.

Hiya,

I use a synology ds412+ using iscsi for production and a second one for backup.

I have nic teaming going to a cisco 3750G switch.

I must admit i have 1 dc and an exchange and an application server and about 10 linux servers mostly web servers.

The performance is not bad at all but then again the boxes are not under heavy load.

I have installed proxmox at another site were its in production with one win 2003 and exchange 2003 on the same box and some application and again it works well. That one is on a synology ds411j

Hope this helps,

Raj
