Why is it not possible to upgrade PVE through the API? Updates can be checked and synchronized using the /api2/json/nodes/{node}/apt/update endpoint, but there is currently no API endpoint that allows administrators to install updates or perform a PVE upgrade.

Hi @loste87,

The PVE API calls that initiate these type of tasks are asynchronous. They return a task ID, but that only confirms the task was started, not that it completed successfully. You need to monitor the task and verify its final status.

Everyone has their own risk tolerance, but personally, I'd be cautious about making upgrades completely automatic. A failed upgrade can leave a system unusable or introduce an issue that only becomes apparent later. I'd prefer to retain some oversight of the upgrade process.

There are already mature tools for automating upgrades on Debian-based systems, such as Ansible. Depending on your requirements, using an established configuration management tool may be a more maintainable approach than implementing custom task monitoring and failure handling.

Could this functionality be implemented in PVE? Certainly. If you feel strongly about having it built into the platform, I'd suggest opening a feature request with a clear use case and justification. Proxmox also accepts code contributions, should you wish to help implement it. But check with Dev list first to see if anyone is already working on it!

Cheers.
