Update without internet connection.

Hello all,

I am considering dropping VMware for Proxmox Paid version. The problem is our servers are not allowed direct internet access. So getting to the repositories for updates will not be available. These servers will be mission critical servers.

My question is:

Are the updates from the enterprise repository absolutely necessary? or;
Am I allowed to setup an internal repository that has a copy of the enterprise repository.

Thanks,
Mike

=> just use a http proxy for internet access (and getting the updates).

I'll second that question...
We're testing Proxmox to replace esxi in our DC located inside a bank.
There's no option what-so-ever for internet access, direct or by-proxy. Only option is to somehow have the updates appear in the local network.
What are the options then?
Assuming paid subscription of course, can one mirror then manually build a local non-internet connected repo? Is there a better option?

If you have no online updates, you need to apply the updates offline - so yes, this is possible but a lot more work than just clicking a button.

Mirroring and Re-distributing the enterprise update/online service is not allowed, see our Subscription Agreement.

If you have further questions regarding our agreement and services, better get in touch with office@proxmox.com

Tom,
Thank you for your quick reply.
I don't mind having more work, but we need to know manual updates (and security patches) are possible as a supported path.
Since I'm sure there are other forum member/proxmox users from the Fintech or other regulated domains which probably have similar requirements, would you kindly detail what manual updates involve?
(I will contact office@, but I believe such information is of interest to a greater audience).

Thank you,
S.

Thank you everyone for the interest. I will talk with the staff and see if Proxmox is still an option. I like the idea of apt-offline just mentioned, might be a solution.
I work at large law firm that has a completely separate network for client files that has and cannot have internet access. I am not even allowed to VLAN to seperate the networks. Nope two of everything!

I Still hope to get away from VMware and move to Proxmox, seems like a great system. But never have done any manually updating to linux, it might be over my head right now. I won't even know which packages need updating. I guess if I get the unlimited support, I can call them every other day and ask if I need to update.

Tom,

One last question. The Subscription Agreement says:

Important note: (Re-)Distributing Software packages received under this Subscription Agreement to a third party or using any of the subscription services for the benefit of a third party is a material breach of the agreement. Even though the open source license applicable to individual software packages may give you the right to distribute those packages (this limitation is not intended to interfere with your rights under those individual licenses).

First, I would not be giving the software to a third party and it never mentions mirroring. And second, the license should give me a license to use the files within the enterprise repository as needed, whether it be for an automatic update verse a manual update.

I my case, I would have many licensed servers running and to save on bandwidth and give my servers the ability to update, I would make a copy (as if doing a manual update) on to one of our servers so that Proxmox servers can update.

So my question again would be: Can I make a copy of the enterprise repository files for updating fully licensed Proxmox servers?

Squigly,

If you talk to office@proxmox.com, please let us all know what they say. From my reading setting up an internal repo should be allowed.

Mike
