Update to qemu-kvm-0.12/block migration

Hi,

would it be a big deal to upgrade proxmox to use qemu-kvm-0.12 and to support the exciting "block migration feature" ?

See http://linux-kvm.com/content/qemu-kvm-012-adds-block-migration-feature

there are some issues with 0.12 so we decided to stay on the 0.11 for the moment.

why is this feature so exiting for you? if you migrate, you want it fast. storage migration is always slow by design - fast migration is what most of our users requests, therefore you should use NAS/SAN storage.

Well, why is the Feature so exiting:

First of all this is the only why to live migrate machines without SAN or DRBD equipment. Some installations simply do not need a SAN just for migrating a machine live once in a year. In these installations it also does not matter if migration is quick or slower as long as it is live.

SAN still is expensive, although you can do it with legacy hardware for good performance and stability you still need fast drives, lots of spindles, hw raid controllers and so on. Also you do not want a single point of failure, so you need the second san.

For a company with 5 vms using a SAN only for live migration feature this might be a big overhead ...

just if you do not know it - we already had this feature (storage live migration) in proxmox ve prior 1.4 (before we implemented the new storage model).

for small companies its ok to do a offline migration in most cases.

but you are the first one complaining about this. so its looks that it was not that killer feature for most.

but anyways, as soon as we move to next kvm version we will take a look on it as we do it with all new features by default.

This feature sounds interesting for me too. Even smaller companies have reason why live migration would be better then downtime. In my opinion adoII bring up some good points. Some NFS server can be created quickly but http://forum.proxmox.com/../members/2478-adoII SPOF is in fact something to think about.

Hmm,
wouldnt it be possible to compile a kvm-0.12.deb package that can be optionally installed on proxmox 1.5 ?
